Right smack in the center of action

Right smack in the center of action

Front, back, left, right, above, below.

Thanks to new tech and algorithms, we’re finally seeing the whole picture—in full spherical, 360-degree view.

I’m talking, of course, about 360-degree content. Video, in particular. In March last year, YouTube announced it was supporting uploads of 360 videos onto the site. Later in the year, it was Facebook’s turn to jump in on the craze. With support for 360 content, the social networking site enables users to choose the angle from which to watch videos. Oh, the wonders of tech!

With traditional video, we are told the story in a linear way. The content creator chooses what to show and tell us. With 360, however, the dynamics are changing. We are right in the center of the action and we can choose which story line to follow, and what scenes we want to see from our vantage point. We can“move” around and explore. Immersive? You bet.

What’s great about 360 videos is that you don’t need VR headsets to enjoy them. All you need is your smartphone, tablet,or computer. Sure, VR head sets will add immersive element to the experience, but it’s nota requirement.

The accessibility of more affordable tech and gadgets is driving this innovation. And we can imagine it can only get better from here. The possibilities are extraordinary as well—real estate, travel, advertising, education, and sports are just some of the industries that can benefit from 360 content.

The Earth is round. What better way to view it than from any and all angles?
